Im like the improved functionality but I have to say the colour scheme is really not to my taste at all. I find it garish and over-blown. I wonder if the designers could mute it down a bit?

  2. Phillip Willing Thu, 13 Dec 2007 11:13:52 UTC

    hello
Lost passsword link does not work.

  3. eben halford Thu, 13 Dec 2007 12:04:07 UTC

    @ Joel -
Thanks for your feedback, Colour on the web is a tricky issue - as I’m sure you can appreciate every users monitor is set up differently. An LCD will display a different colour temperature profile to a CRT and there are differences again between Mac, PC and Linux systems. In addition to that each user can change their own monitor settings and colour depth!

I agree that the colours chosen *could be garish if your monitor contrast and brightness are max’d out.

    Cheers,
    Eben

P.S Love the water-cooled PC too Joel - I’ve always felt a bit of trepidation about combining water and electronics.

  4. eben halford Thu, 13 Dec 2007 12:09:30 UTC

    @ Phillip

Update - well the lost password link works for me but we have had another user with the same issue - this is now reported as a bug and is being looked at by the dev team

I’ll look into it - if there is an issue I’ll raise a bug ticket and get the dev team to look into it. Have u made sure to whitelist us in your email system so that we don’t get trapped as spam?

    Cheers,
    Eben

I use your site every week to search for public sector IT-type jobs in the Greater London area. I’m afraid I don’t like the new-look search as I now have to select every single London Borough separately. Could you add a “Greater London” choice in Location?
    Thanks

  6. richardt Thu, 13 Dec 2007 12:35:23 UTC

Jane, many thanks for your feedback. Apologies if it appears that we’ve lost a bit of your preferred functionality in the transition..

You can still search multiple boroughs by clicking ‘vacancies’ (in the top naviagation bar)/ then ‘full search’ / and then highlight the London boroughs you’re interested in..

You’re can then save this search string and have these jobs emailed to you directly or sent by RSS to your mobile phone..

We will be addressing various usability issues in the next round of developments which are due to kick off in january, so watch this space…

Thanks again, your suggestions are most welcome,

Richard Tyrie and the rest of the Jobsgopublic Team…

  7. Adam Porter Thu, 13 Dec 2007 12:38:47 UTC

The old site searched by ‘date posted’ which was great for regular daily users like me.

The new scheme, while perhaps better for new users, slows down my use of the site. Meaning I have to scan through loads of jobs I’ve seen before.

Perhaps a ‘latest jobs’ link on the front page might satisfy moaners like me.

  8. richardt Thu, 13 Dec 2007 13:14:41 UTC

Adam, thanks for your feedback, duly noted.

If it helps, you can save your preferred job searches and have the new opportunities sent to your inbox or mobile phone (via RSS) - this will save you having to search for new jobs every day..

We will feed this suggestion to incorporate ‘date posted’ into the development pipeline and we’ll try to address in January.

Thanks again for your constructive moan - much appreciated.! ;)

    Richard

  9. Steve Thu, 13 Dec 2007 16:52:37 UTC

Similarly to Adam, I also fid it much harder to use as a regular, if not daily, browser. It was very handy being able to scroll down the list of newly added jobs until reaching one of those recognised from a previous visit. Signing up to email lists is not always the answer as many workplaces do not allow access to the yahoos and hotmails of this world whilst possessing an inbox full of mail from a jobsearch website may arouse the interest of the techy spies! Could the relevance field (surely not necessary on a jobsearch site when the user has already stipulated desired area and/or type- who’s going to stop looking when the percentage dips below a certain figure?) be ditched for a date added one?

  10. eben halford Thu, 13 Dec 2007 17:46:33 UTC

    @Steve
What did you think of the search and results layout on the test site that we launched for feedback last month?

We’ll look to introduce ‘filter by newness’ in the next release in Jan08

    Cheers
    Eben

P.s create an RSS feed of your search. Use google reader or your fav RSS app to read the feed. This will let you see what you’ve already read.

  11. Matthew Mardling Thu, 13 Dec 2007 18:13:56 UTC

The type face for the lists and general lay out of the lists is much harder to read.

The search by multipal categories no longer seems to work as it did.

    Matthew

  12. Mark Thu, 13 Dec 2007 20:28:19 UTC

The new site is absoultely awful. Design, colours, searching …I could go on. It looks like a thousand other sites on the net for open source software using a bog standard template, with a few colour changes and a naff logo. Now I see it’s powered by Wordpress, so I am right ……

The old site was one of the best on the net in terms of design, layout, functionality and ease of use.

  13. eben halford Thu, 13 Dec 2007 21:46:54 UTC

    @ Matthew
Thanks for taking the time to feedback, what makes the layout of the lists harder to read? If you could be a tad more specific we could look to incorporate your thoughts into the next release.

Which font? The serif or the sans? We had no negative feedback when we previewed the designs several moths ago so we left them as they are. As you can imagine its a little surprising to get so much design feedback at this late date - but keep it coming, because as we’ve said we will look to incorporate some of these changes in the next release.

    Cheers,
    Eben

  14. eben halford Thu, 13 Dec 2007 21:54:27 UTC

    @Mark
Say what you mean Mark don’t beat around the bush - LOL - Again if you think something should change, it would help if you could be more specific. Not sure why you mention OSS?

This blog is indeed built using Wordpress - a very popular blog engine - and yes it uses a pre-made (not even modified) template called ScribbishWP - as indicated in the footer of the page.

www.jobgopublic.com is not built on Wordpress - if only it was that simple Mark. Use the tools at netcraft if you care to find out what we built it in - or just ask.

I’m gad you liked the old site design - you can approximate it if you like by turning off stylesheets on the current site ;)

    Cheers
    Eben

  15. Jon Thu, 13 Dec 2007 23:35:21 UTC

I have now tried to reset my password six times and failed as the link does not work. I can not log on and can not contact the webmaster to compain. Not what I would call an improvement.

  16. eben halford Fri, 14 Dec 2007 00:07:54 UTC

    @Jon
Thanks for your feedback Jon. I’m sorry that you are experiencing issues with logging in. As I said in response to Philip above - this has been logged as a bug and should be fixed. I believe a maintenance release will be pushed out incorporating a fix within the next 24 hrs.

Do you get an email when u click the link? Some users - and we think we’ve identified a small subset - have had issues logging in. Oddly enough the change password link is working - it’s just that they cant log-in even with the changed password. So the password is changing - but the system is still failing to authorise you.

Please get back in touch if this issue is not resolved for you in the next 24hrs and we will investigate further.

At the very least I think this blog is an improvement Jon - without it we wouldn’t be talking would we? And no one would be able to see what you think.

    Cheers
    Eben

P.S Even though you may not realise it Jon - you have managed to get thru to more than the site ‘webmaster’

  17. Rachel Berryman Fri, 14 Dec 2007 18:27:22 UTC

    My favourite thing about the old site was that the newly advertised jobs appeared first on the search list, but this doesn’t seem to happen any more - or if it does it’s not clear. Is there any way of either;
-adding a ‘added to site’ in the search criterea, with options such as, ‘last 24 hrs’, ‘last 3 days’, ‘last 7 days’, ‘last 14 days’.
    OR
-having the option to show the results in ‘most recently added’ list.

It would be really helpful as I feel like I have to keep trawling through all the jobs.

    Thanks
    Rachel

  18. eben halford Fri, 14 Dec 2007 23:19:23 UTC

    @Rachel
Thanks for the feedback - several other, and I suspect more users besides, would like to see that feature back. We will be doing that in our January release.

As a work around you can create an RSS feed of your search. Then use google reader or your fav RSS app to read the feed. This will let you see what you’ve already read i.e. old jobs

Also when you have clicked on a job it’s ticked to let you know you’ve looked at it.

    Cheers,
    Eben

  19. kamrul Sat, 15 Dec 2007 12:56:11 UTC

I liked the old front page because it offered a more comprehensive search facility. This new one feels like it’s a copy of a lot the other search sites. The page borders with shadow are only cosmetic and take away a lot of the horizontal space. The old pages where flexible and adapt quite nicely to most resolution. On this new one you either have to scroll to see the full page or get big page borders (on the higher resolutions).

I have tried your site on two monitors now (CRT and TFT). I have to say I am would have preferred another colour to the green scheme used.

I do like the fact that the search results are in columns. You are able to click on the heading for the columns to show in ascending or descending order (e.g. closing date). I would have liked a summary of the job description as the titles as they are sometime vague. I suspect the limiting factor again being the horizontal space.

On the old search facility you had an option to select all of greater London, on this new one you have to manually select all London boroughs. Please bring this option back.

  20. eben halford Sat, 15 Dec 2007 16:12:12 UTC

    @Kamrul
Thanks for the detailed feedback. We chose a fixed width (800×600) because it offered more control than a fluid layout. I’d like to use 1024 x 768 for the page fold but unfortunately 10% of our users are still stuck at 800 x 600 resolution. We’ll look again at fluid layouts though.

The green was chosen because the Jobsgopublic logo has always been green - but again we’ll look at the colour scheme.

A summary job description is an interesting idea :) - what about having it appear as a tool tip when users hover over the Job Title?

Were looking at the location selection issue right now.

    Cheers
    Eben

    Hello Eben
Lost password link was not working still.
    So
I have abandoned my old account and
re-registered with a new email address and a new password from scratch.
    This works fine.

I did noticed that problems occur if you use google autofill.
Strange error ” blank in line 1″
worth investigating if this is the cause of problem.

    Phillip

  22. Phillip Willing Thu, 20 Dec 2007 00:43:16 UTC

    Hello
It would be nice to have a link back to the main site from the blog space.
    cheers
    Phillip

  23. eben halford Thu, 20 Dec 2007 04:20:16 UTC

    Hi Phillip,

Sorry you were still having issues with your log-in details. It’s a pain to have to re-register with a whole new email - come the new year we can look to ‘merge’ your old account data into your new account if that helps?

I’d give you a more definitive answer to the password re-set issue but I’m half way around the world ‘on leave’ at the moment. I know from talking to the development team that there are still a few users who are having issues with the password reset system (they are looking at the issue and will post here when it’s identified and fixed). It’s an odd one as I had several accounts on the previous system - which upgraded fine (gmail accounts) after the initial password reset fix. Thanks for the Google autofill tip - we’ll check it out.

Good idea about linking back to the main site from here. I’ll get on it when I’m back in the office.

    Cheers,
    Eben

  24. nick Fri, 21 Dec 2007 12:32:42 UTC

really dissapointed with the new site…sorry.
the new look is terrible (looks much cheaper and lots of font issues that have already been raised earlier). however much worse than the look is the functionality in my opinion. I no longer seem to be able to view the job spec or any specific details of a job without sending for an application pack. i used to breifly scan the job spec to see if it was soomething i should persue through applying. Not having this info will now mean having to wait for a reply from the HR department of where i am applying with the full deatils of the job which may take me past the job deadline anyway.
please please say i am just being stupid and this is still possible?

  25. eben halford Fri, 21 Dec 2007 14:10:15 UTC

    @Nick
Well I guess design beauty is in the eye of the beholder. As you say much more important is the functionality. Lets see if we can’t sort this out.

You may have missed the bits you are looking for. All the additional job details are to be found below the Google location map - they are in PDF format for you to download and view.

Do you have a specific job in mind that you cannot see details for?

    Cheers,
    Eben

  26. ssharp Sat, 22 Dec 2007 07:08:42 UTC

I have logged on OK but I can not see details of any vacancies at all! I assume system is broken??

    Regards,
    Sarah

    Hi

I’m finding this site difficult to use (it might just be me though). Once I’ve done a search I click on the job title and it opens a new page giving me information about the job - but when I click on the ‘back’ button (I use the microsoft explorer arrow) I get a message saying that the search wasn’t saved and I have to start the search again. Even weirder is that this doesn’t happen every time. I don’t have this problem on the NHS site.
Can you help? It’s driving me mad.

  28. eben halford Sat, 22 Dec 2007 19:10:34 UTC

    @ssharp
I can see them from Mexico - can u see them now?

    Cheers,
    Eben

  29. eben halford Sat, 22 Dec 2007 19:12:45 UTC

    @Nick
I’m sorry, but as it’s the weekend and I’m out of the country this will have to wait until Monday when someone in the office will get back to you.

    Cheers,
    Eben

  30. Chris Mon, 24 Dec 2007 16:13:56 UTC

What was wrong with the old site. Have given up searching using this one. I am looking for jobs in the south west - it doesn’t seem to let you search on this category even in the advanced search section. Also took me a while to find how to do this kind of search. Doubt I will use the site any more.

  31. ttt Fri, 28 Dec 2007 11:06:56 UTC

pls fix this site after resetting my password i cannot log in i get a message that says “this account is not let active” this needs to be fixed ASAP

  32. Kathleen Wed, 02 Jan 2008 09:46:22 UTC

Looking forward to ‘filter by newness’.

My other niggle is that the exact location is not shown on the listing - you have to look at the detail. For jobs at lower grades one might not be willing to traverse an entire county!

  33. Rachael Thu, 03 Jan 2008 20:40:19 UTC

had to reset my password, your site now tells me that my acct is not active - can no longer use your site. brilliant!

  34. Faye Fri, 04 Jan 2008 10:51:49 UTC

    Hi,

I am really grateful that you have this blog to enable us to give feedback. There are bound to be teething problems there always are. However, if you implement the suggestions of your regular users this site will be brilliant not just good.

Was wondering if you could please retain some of the old functions of the old site such as giving us the option to search all london boroughs without having to select every single on of them. I how to do this, it’s just a real pain in the butt. It was really easy to do this and just have all the jobs in greater London come up.
Also I don’t find the new site as user friendly as the old one. Primarily because I didn’t know initially how to limit my search to just the london area. My philosophy is if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Could you tell me why you completely changed the look of the site???? Did you have numerous complaints about the way it was??? I preferred it, I find the new design really laborious to deal with as it takes me more time to find the jobs I am looking for. Would you be able to integrate the old with the new? For example on the front page include the refine search menu so one doesn’t have to search in vain for it? It’s really important to be able to refine the search to one main area i.e greater london rather than having to select all of the boroughs. I feel people who may not wish to sign up to your free email alerts may be deterred by this. I use to really like this site for it’s user friendliness. Now I feel there is more pizazz than substance. Please work your magic and restore my faith in this once fantastic site.

  35. Steve Sat, 05 Jan 2008 14:14:25 UTC

I had a saved completed application on the old system which I now can’t find. The only message I have seen is that incomplete applications would not be saved.

is it possible to retrieve my saved CV & completed application from the old website????

  36. Jane Woodroof Tue, 08 Jan 2008 10:27:52 UTC

    Hello,

Your site is great for its range of jobs and I made extensive/exclusive use of the “search by employer” function on the old site. I am dismayed to find it no longer exits and find that the search methods now available to me do not bring up as comprehensive a range of potential employers/jobs as I was used to seeing. Please consider bringing this facility back.

    Regards

    Jane

  37. Paul Everitt Thu, 10 Jan 2008 15:51:43 UTC

I agree with Jane Woodroff’s comments. Also, there is no single Greater London search criterion - it works when I enter all of the Boroughs individually but then immediately times me out after I’ve checked any listed job. This means I have to re-enter the search criteria after looking at each job. I gave up in frustration!

    Regards
    Paul Everitt

  38. Haylee Tue, 15 Jan 2008 13:28:00 UTC

    Hello Jane,

Thanks for comment, as you may have already read in our ‘announcement’ section, the employer feature will most definitely be returning to search functionality within the site.

In the meantime, you are able to search for specific employer vacancies using the keyword search. The more relevant jobs for that employer will hold the higher relevance and be listed at the top of the page. If you are to then click on ‘employer’ it will sort the list by employer name.

I hope this helps, and rest assured the employer functionality will be returning (by popular demand).

    Haylee Corfield

  39. Haylee Tue, 15 Jan 2008 13:37:07 UTC

    Hi Paul Everitt,

We’ve now improved the search criteria for London, so that you are do not have to enter all the Boroughs individually. This should ease your frustration considerably and improve your job searching.

Thanks for your comment, we are taking these all into account to improve your experience using Jobsgopublic.

    Hi Faye,

Thanks for your comment, and yes this blog is a great way to collect and respond to your feedback. I hope you’ve noted that as I mentioned above we’ve added in the search for ‘All London Boroughs’. Just trying to reduce that ‘pain in your butt’ as you put it ;)

    Happy blogging.
