It is that festive time of year once again. This means there is a strong chance for many of you the office Christmas party is fast approaching. Usually, these parties are a great way to celebrate the Christmas holiday with their managers and colleagues, as well as a way of getting of getting to know their bosses outside of the workplace. However, a Christmas party with your company is far different from a Christmas party with your friends. You don’t have to be boring or afraid to talk to anyone – just use a little common sense and you’ll still have fun. If you are new on the job market and unfamiliar with how these parties work, look at these blunders and avoid them in order to keep your position secure, as well as have a great work night out.
1. Don’t Drink Too Much
While it’s fun to drink at parties, especially at Christmas, you should remember that you are surrounded by people you work with, and so you should keep an eye on how much you drink. Obviously you want to have fun, but just be sensible and know your own limits. You do not want to risk saying inappropriate things or misbehaving, or throwing up all over your director’s new jacket or dress… Do you really want to be the talk of the office for the next month for all of the wrong reasons?
2. Don’t Dress Inappropriately
Christmas parties are a great opportunity to dress up, but for your office Christmas party, you should strive to make sure that you look appropriate as well as festive. Sadly, this means leaving your naughty Santa or elf outfit at home for the evening, as well as avoiding dressing as though you’re going on a stag night or to a hen party.
Ask in advance what the recommended dress code is, and stick to it. Opt for business clothing if you are unsure. If you want to show off your Christmas cheer, try a Christmas jumper or santa hat!
3. Don’t Drunkenly Harass Your Co-workers
Broadcasting your desire to hit on or harass the people who work with you all over Facebook and Twitter also comes with a risk of sexual harassment charges, not to mention decreased chances of actually being successful at seducing the receptionist…
4. Don’t Get Your Boss Drunk and Discuss Your Salary
This is not the time to discuss a raise or promotion. It is a time to relax and celebrate the holiday with your colleagues. Don’t turn it into an attempt to have an informal discussion with your superiors after they are five drinks into the night.
5. Don’t Post Photos of Your Boss on Facebook or Instagram
It may be tempting to take pictures of yourself, your co-workers, and your bosses as the party goes on, especially if something fun is happening! Try to only take photos when you have permission, though, and always ask if you can upload them to Facebook or Twitter. And try to avoid photos of your bosses or managers after they’ve had too many. Here is a case of common sense, if you think the photo is suitable and not inappropriate then post away. If it isn’t beware of the consequences.
Most of all enjoy yourself, and allow others to enjoy themselves. You have worked hard all year and deserve some time to relax and enjoy the festive period.
