Thanks for your mention of Total Place. Just a couple of points – Total Place is overseen by a Ministerial group and a high-level officials’ group which include representatives from the LGA Group, delivery agencies from the pilot places and the significant spend departments, including HM Treasury. It’s not a London Councils initiative, although there are two London authorities involved.

The thirteen pilots are from across England, and there are around 80 other places who are doing similar work – there’s a list on our site, along with lots of other information for anyone who’s interested.

I have a lot of experience of the issues raised in this programme, having lived in the area and worked in the sector described.
Yes it was just a TV show, but Evan Davies is a very astute presenter. The fact is, supermarkets want cheap supplies of food, and consumers collude in this….no questions asked as to who cropped the food and under what conditions!
The government wants food prices low (few questions asked) in order to keep cost of living indeces low.
Farming is undervalued and mis-understood by consumers who have very urban mindsets.
Education prioritises desk-based skills….even for those who 50 years ago would have found work on the land.
Modified piece-work in the fields is a hard physical task…the irony was that many of the unemployed were shown working out in the gym!
This topic deserves a more thorough investigation, but the programme certainly raised some good points.

It may be the case that british workers want more from employment but the irony is that many simply dont have the required skills. This is a longstanding issue in Wisbech and not due to recent in-migration.
On the other hand those with the skills including degrees etc are cutting asparugus to earn a basic living! These are the realities of modern day markets where both sides are being failed by the system. Mr Davis with his global economic credentials might have reflected on this instead of reaching facile conclusions.

This was NOT in any sense a true reflection of unemployed job seekers experience. IT WAS A TV PROGRAMME! As such it was designed to amuse as much as inform. As an experiment it lacked proper scientic design.
The bit that really pi**ed me off was Evan bigshot Davies economics man browsing through the jobcentre ads machine and suggesting there were plenty of jobs out there. We jobseekers all know that for every lower skilled job advert eg admin assist, hundreds of people are likely to apply. I noted 754 applications on Reed Agency website recently for an insurance admin job in Romford Essex. I note that the potatoe packers did ok but were not able to secure a job in the factory. That was a reasonable test in my opinion whereas the other jobs did require more skill or experience especially the indian resturant. I think it was a shame the people who said they would do it bottled out. However look at it from there view, it was just two days work in an unfamiliar type of job with a camera watching you and NO guarentee of a job outcome. This was TV and rather poorly done. Might get the BNP a few votes at the next election!

When you use the phrase “labor shortage” or “skills shortage” you’re speaking in a sentence fragment. What you actually mean to say is: “There is a labor shortage at the salary level I’m willing to pay.” That statement is the correct phrase; the complete sentence and the intellectually honest statement.

Some people speak about shortages as though they represent some absolute, readily identifiable lack of desirable services. Price is rarely accorded its proper importance in their discussion.

If you start raising wages and improving working conditions, and continue doing so, you’ll solve your shortage and will have people lining up around the block to work for you even if you need to have huge piles of steaming manure hand-scooped on a blazing summer afternoon.

And if you think there’s going to be a shortage caused by employees retiring out of the workforce: Guess again: With the majority of retirement accounts down about 50% or more, most people entering retirement age are working well into their sunset years. So, you won’t be getting a worker shortage anytime soon due to retirees exiting the workforce.

Some specialized jobs require training and/or certification, again, the solution is higher wages and improved benefits. People will self-fund their re-education so that they can enter the industry in a work-ready state. The attractive wages, working conditions and career prospects of technology during the 1980’s and 1990’s was a prime example of people’s willingness to self-fund their own career re-education.

There is never enough of any good or service to satisfy all wants or desires. A buyer, or employer, must give up something to get something. They must pay the market price and forego whatever else he could have for the same price. The forces of supply and demand determine these prices — and the price of a skilled workman is no exception. The buyer can take it or leave it. However, those who choose to leave it (because of lack of funds or personal preference) must not cry shortage. The good is available at the market price. All goods and services are scarce, but scarcity and shortages are by no means synonymous. Scarcity is a regrettable and unavoidable fact.

Shortages are purely a function of price. The only way in which a shortage has existed, or ever will exist, is in cases where the “going price” has been held below the market-clearing price.
