6 tips to help you stop procrastinating at work

Let’s face it, we all do it from time to time.

Even the most motivated of us put work off that needs to be done and procrastinate instead.

The truth is, it can become a bit of a bad habit – but like any habit it can definitely be stamped out!

Take a look at our 6 top tips that can help you to put an end to procrastination today.

Avoid Distractions

Whether it’s finding out which type of potato you are through a quiz on Buzzfeed or having a long chin wag at the water cooler with your favourite co worker, it can be easy to get distracted from the important stuff that needs doing.

Now, this isn’t to say that your job has to be all work and no play! However, it’s about finding a good balance.

Try and save browsing the web for things other than work for your lunch and tea breaks. And be more aware of reigning in the conversations with your work bestie if time is getting on.

Think ‘Why’

Some tasks that we do at work can be tedious and feel never ending. However, when you find yourself procrastinating, ask yourself why you’re doing it.

A lot of the time even the smallest tasks can have a positively big impact on the companies we work for on a larger scale. It could also be that it’s helping out another team in a different department of your job – and having a quick turn around time would be highly appreciated!

Remember, a lot of times hard work doesn’t go unrecognised by a good manager, so keep in mind that this could be beneficial for you in the long run when it comes to promotions and excelling in your career.

Ask for help

It sounds like a simple thing to do, but it can be hard to ask for help sometimes. But being overwhelmed with the amount of work that you have on can lead to you putting it off.

It might be a case that you have a lot of smaller tasks that need to be completed which is holding you back from a bigger job that is more urgent.

Getting your colleagues to help you with these tasks can free up your time to get this done and avoid procrastinating.

Organise your deadlines

Knowing that you have a lot of deadlines coming at you at once can be daunting and can make them hard to tackle.

To avoid stress-induced procrastination, try and organise your tasks and deadlines into a simple list. Categorise them according to level of importance and the estimated amount of time they’ll take to do.

By adopting a more streamlined way of working, procrastination won’t seem as tempting.

Know your productivity triggers

We all have times in the day where we are more prepared for different jobs that we have on.

Perhaps your creativity peaks in the mornings and then takes a dip later on in the day.
Identify what these patterns are in yourself and use this to your advantage when prioritising your work.

So for example if you’re working on a creative project and are more creative at 10am, take time out to work and put your energy into this at that time.

If you have more admin based tasks, shift this until the afternoon where you don’t require so much of your creative juices.

Reward Yourself

Give yourself something to work towards. This can be what you need to keep you motivated and get your work done.

Set yourself small incentives to keep you going. For example, allow yourself a tea/coffee break after you’ve finished a task. And definitely help yourself to some cake that Sharon from finance has brought in!
