How to stay motivated throughout the Christmas period

Arran Williams, December 14, 2015

We all know that it can be hard to remain motivated around the Christmas holidays, especially with all the turkey and mince pies weighing us down and the seemingly never-ending Christmas shopping. Job-hunting during this time can often be an even bigger struggle! However, this is a great time to take advantage of some extra time off and get your job search in motion. We have put together a list of things that you can do to help yourself remain motivated and ensure that you are making the best of your job-hunting time over the holidays.

Volunteering

An alternative to active job hunting could be to take advantage of the many opportunities to volunteer over the Christmas period. This is not only a great way to help some incredibly worthy causes but will also be a great addition to your CV. Showing employers that you are willing to go the extra mile and apply yourself is a strong attribute to have. Check some out here.

Network

Christmas is a time when many of us will be surrounded by family and friends. Rather than spending more time discussing the Eastenders Christmas special, why not talk to them about job opportunities and career advice, especially if you are unsure about the direction that you want to go in? You may be surprised how many of them were in your shoes before and some may even know of an upcoming vacancy or have helpful contacts. Also, don’t forget to connect with recruiters through social media. Using online social platforms such as LinkedIn are an effective way to do this and will also make your job search a lot more personable.

Get Creative

Take a break

This blog may be about all the various things you could be doing but don’t forget to actually take a break! It’s so important to take time out to enjoy the holidays. Job searching can be mentally draining, leaving you feeling tired and uninspired. Taking some time to relax with family and friends will allow you to recharge your batteries, ready to get back to it with renewed energy and motivation. Set designated days aside to do whatever you feel like with no obligation to check on job applications or work on your CV.

Stay ahead of the competition

There is a common myth that recruiters will not be hiring around this time of year. This means that many people stop looking for vacancies. However, don’t give up. Many companies will be looking for people to join them in the New Year, so stay ahead of the competition by keeping an eye out for new opportunities, sending out applications and connecting with employers through social media.

Write a list

writingWrite down goals and things that you want to achieve during this time and in the future. For example, set yourself a target of how many job applications you would like to complete for in the space of two days. Then tick these off once they are done. On a bigger scale, (as cliché as it sounds) write down your 5-year plan and how you plan to reach this. Remember, as long as you are working to your plan, you are continually moving forward. It can be easier said then done to remain motivated. But it is so important to stay determined and keep going! Good luck and Merry Christmas from everyone at Jobsgopublic!
